Are you sure its not just because you are using the tape adapter. With the digital age of CD's and MP3's etc, its easy to forget just how bad quality tapes really are. Do you have another tape player you could try it in and see if it is the same?

It sometimes sounds very distorted, i havnt had a chance to play around with the ipod settings yet but any idea on why its distorted, car is 318i 1989, has good speakers but sounds really crackly, i dont have the money yet for a new sound system, but if needed i will put some money into it sounding good

The crackling may be due to dust on the input jack to the mp3 or dust on the tape heads since you're basically using the magnetic tape heads to get your analog signal. You can vaccuum the tape deck and inputs and use a tape head cleaner.Also try turning the ipod volume down and the stereo up or visa vera.
