I have a 04 mercedes e320 and on the display it says esp malfunction?

When i try turning on the car the engine doesnt start and i hear like a fan just getting louder adn louder . but when i turn the key the air conditioning still works. also on the display it says esp malfunction visit workshop. any ideas on whats wrong with it?
