Change battery on 1998 Audi A3?

The battery on my 1998 Audi A3 1,8 died, and I would like to change it myself. On top of the battery there's a small plastic console with some fuses and what may be electronics. Is it safe to just remove that box of plastic and fuses to get to the battery below? Is there anything I have to watch or be particularly careful about?
Any insights appreciated.
