BMW Tyres, are they expensive?

I've been offered a BMW 316i (E36 I think) 97 for quite cheap but I'm worried about maintenance costs. Are Tyre's really expensive, I've been told that the cheapest you can get a set for is $1400 (Australian) Is that right? And if so, do they last a long time? Do I have to get expensive bmw ones or can I just get normal good quality tyres?
I know BMW doesn't make a tyre, but I was told they were special soft core tyres or something specific to BMW's. Thanks.

BMW doesn't manufacture tires. They probably come with a high-end michelin or pirelli tires, but you could find much cheaper alternatives.

BMW doesn't make a tire.
You can get any tire you want put on your car so long as it's the correct size.
Dunlop, Yokohama, Kumho, Good Year, Michelin, Toyo... Those are just a SMALL few of tire makers.
