Why does my 1998 Nissan Altima squeal loudly ONLY when I turn on the AC?
I have a 1998 Nissan Altima, basic version 5-speed. When I turn on m AC, and only when I turn on my AC, something squeals pretty badly. I replaced the belts myself before this started happening but since it ONLY happens when I turn on the AC - it can't be that. Any ideas?
The squeal goes away after 20 or 30 secs.
Also - the two fans the keep the engine cool.... they kick off every so often, as they should. When they kick back ON, it may squeal quickly, hardly at all or a lot. So it COULD be whatever kicks those two fans on. Whatever that might be... compressor? not sure.
Whatever it is, can I fix it myself????
...and the A/C works like a charm, nice and cold....
Although-- the coolant has had a small leak for years. I just refill it every so often.
I checked the belt tension already.
