can i unplug my cruise control box on my 91 honda accord and drive without it?

see every now and then my car wont pull in d4 so i have to shift it down d2 then back up to d4....and i can be driving fine in d4 and out of the blue it seems like it drops in 2nd gear by its self...i dont know what can be causing this but it is driving me crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
