Why isnt my computer detect a blank DVD?

Why isnt my computer detect a blank DVD?
It shows up as a blank thing under My Computer in the D: drive, but when I open any DVD burning software, it says there is no media inserted. I have a Dell Dimension and the disk says Memorex DVD-R. Please help!
