Why doesn't my DVD player work with my RCA cables plugged into Plasma TV?

I only have RCA cables for my DVD player but when I plug them into the corresponding sockets on my plasma TV, nothing happens (it says no signal). If I plug the RCA cable into the YPbPr sockets (the blue, read, green sockets) I can get picture but no sound! Help!
