why cant my computer read DVD-Roms?

why cant my computer read DVD-Roms?
I have "LITE-ON CD-ROM LTN-487T" and when i right click and go to hard ware i see it "LITE-ON CD-ROM LTN-487T" and under type it says "DVD/CD-Rom drives" so it should be able to read DVD-ROMs, but my computer cant read dvd roms it can read regular cds but not dvd. My operating system is Windows Xp Professional service pack 2.
