When to replace a DVD player?

I know it's at least 3 years old, probably about 5. Its an APEX CD/DVD/MP3 the picture is just fine, but it makes popping sounds and distorts the sound. Is it just time to replace it or does it need a cleaning? Also will playing burnt DVDs do anything to it? I'm thinking this could be the cause...Will they do anything to my computer if I play them on here? I made them all as back-ups, so bad DVDs can't be the source.
