What factors into DVD set prices falling?

Other than the economy, newer releases, re-releases, etc. what else factors into how and when DVD sets are priced?

I've been looking into buying some Star Trek DVDs, but I've noticed they have been hovering around the same price for several years. This is opposed to say the Smallville DVD sets, which is a much more recent show, but has occasionally been dropped to about 20 dollars per set.

I realize I could save and eventually splurge, but I've been waiting for the prices to drop further since it's an older show and don't really understand why it only seems to drop about another 5 dollars every now and then.
