Upconverting DVD player on 480p HDTV?

I have a 30in 480p/1080i HDTV connected to an upconverting DVD player through a HDMI cable. I can't really see any difference from a regular DVD player. Do I have to change certain settings on my TV or is it pointless? *It is not a LCD or Plasma TV. It's one of the older fat HDTVs.

Its not a "True" HD tv, I had an older tv like that with a blu-ray player on it...not much of a difference, maybe a little sharper but thats all. So ya thats all, its an HD tv from a few years ago? It was considered HD a few years ago, but not by todays standards.
