Unable to get dvd drive deteced and working in pc?

I am having a LG dvd writer with winx os.Right now I am not able
to get the ld dvd drive detected in device manager or my computer. The cd/dvd is not detected when pc is being used .
But the strange thing is that if I have a bootable cd/dvd then I am able to boot with it and use it ,which wud mean that the h/w is fine and bios is recognising it. I have tried deleting the upper-lower filters; and tried updating lg dvd writer firmware(which says no source device found).
    Any suggestions wud be welcome.
    thanx
just checked and found no upper lower filter listed under ( {4D36E965-E325-11CE-

BFC1-08002BE10318} entry ; under classes. Cud this be causing issues?
but if the problem is with the cables how wud the bootable cd/dvd's work?

I had a similar problem once, check inside that the cables are all connected.
