Ubuntu External cd/DVD usb?

I just Installed Ubuntu 6.06 LTS- the Dapper Drake version on my laptop. Can't install Windows XP because my CD-Rom is not working. Im just wondering if Ubuntu will detect a external cd/dvd writer/reader via USB and if so which model/type.
(Im planning to use it with the KB cd software. Im also new to ubuntu) Thanks!
