Is there any way to take videos from my computer and burn them to a DVD compatible

with a DVD player? Okay, so I've gone through alot of questions on here, but all of them seem to involve expensive software, or things that are not compatible with a Mac OS X computer.
All I have are some TV shows I downloaded from the internet
(not itunes store bought TV shows, so I guess that means they are already unprotected??) that I want to play on a regular DVD player on my TV.

Also, I've already tried putting it in an iTunes playlist, sticking in a DVD-R cd and clicking "burn", but it kept the MPG4 file and when I put it in my DVD player it said "Incompatible Disc". So, any advice on an easy, free, mac compatible DVD burning software would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

Note: I have toast titanium version 5.2 but no clue what it does...would that help me at all??
