question on writing file to DVD?

hi
am trying to write 3.5 gb iso image file to a CD....but since the CD can take only upto 650 MB,it fails with a disc space error...
do i need to buy a DVD for this
what is the maximum file size a DVD can hold..
how much does a DVD disc cost...
