Ok. There are a number of things that could answer this problem.
The Nero install was on a CD. so the CD played fine (Can you play other CDs in the drive?) Maybe your install got currupter somehow along the line. Uninstall and reinstall the software and see if that works.
If you just bought the drive and installed it on your computer, perhaps it was not physically installed correctly. Check your cabling on back of the unit, please do not open the drive, as there are no serviceable parts inside, and you will ruin your warranty, so you will not be able to return the device for a refund if it is broken.
Check the laser's eye for any obstructions, like a hair or fingerprints on the lens, the lens should look smooth without any marks on it.
If you have an older drive, it might not be able to read writable and rewritable disks.
If none of the above resolutions did anything, then the drive may be unfortunately broken. If you are still under warranty, remove the drive from your computer and return the drive to where you bought it with its original packaging and your receipt ( Only if you bought the drive separately ) If this is the drive than came with your computer, than there is no refund for the drive. Internal DVD writers are very cheap now. Walmart or a comparable discount store may sell them for as low as 50 to 60 dollars United States Tender.
Good luck with your problem, I hope the simplest step can resolve it!
