My dvd drive has power, but it can't read any discs...?

when I put something in, the lights go on, but it doesn't recognize that there is a disc in it. It's a lightscribe drive. I am running Windows XP. I tried reinstalling the driver, but that did nothing.

What else can I do that doesn't involve opening the computer up?

most likely the laser that read the disc has gone out. if that's the case then you might just wanna go ahead and buy a new dvd player bcuz it costs a lot to fix the laser.
