Is it illegal to take dvd backups on holiday?

Can anyone tell me if you own the original movie on dvd but would like to backup them on a dvdr to take with you abroad would this be illegal? I am asking this as America and Canada are region 1, so if your from Austraila or the UK and encode the movie to ntsc so that it works on a US/Canadian dvds player can this be justified? And would this also be in appropiate to burn 3 movies on one disc as this will save space and discs?

Also, if you are recording programmes, documentaries from the tv and take these with you on dvd to watch while on holiday would this be considered as illegal? I'm asking as you wouldnt want your originals getting damaged, lost etc.

No not for money then obviously that would be illegal, i'm talking about personal use for items you own personally and just back them up.

No one will find out anyway, unless you do something stupid and tell everyone you're going to do it on the internet or something.

    Oh wait...
