If I already have a portable external hard drive, is there any reason why I should...

...get a DVD burner? My friends tell me the only reason why I would need a DVD burner is to burn ISO files so that I can get games and programs/applications off the Internet. Other than that, my portable external hard drive seems to handle everything else. Am I (or my friends) overlooking anything here?

a dvd burner would allow you to make permanent backups of your data.

external drives are easy to damage and it's easy to accidentally remove important files.
