How to transfer hi8 tapes to dvd with laptop with no firewire?

I want to transfer alll my old 8mm and hi8 home videos to dvd using my new laptop. So I read old posts here on how to do this but all the answers said you hook the camera and laptop up using firewire. My laptop doesn't have this as far as I can tell, I've looked up the specs and no firewire is listed. Is there another way?
I have a toshiba a305-s6872 it does have ieee after all.
