How do I copy a DVD using my computer (legally, ...read on)?

I have a decent computer and it has a CD/DVD burner. My sister asked me to copy some DVD's from her wedding and I thought it would be no problem, but now I can't figure out how to get the DVD into my computer and out onto a blank DVD. I spent money on blank DVD-R, and told her that I could provide the family with copies, and now I feel stupid. Please help.
