How do I burn a DVD movie that I created using Windows Movie Maker?

I tried dvd-r....didn't work. Then I tried dvd +r which worked but I wasn't able to watch it on other home dvd players. My computer has a dvd burner. The movie is of my sons baseball year using pictures I took during games. Plus a few songs. What am I doing wrong?

    DVD format is MPEG-2,.

If your stand alone player has Divx function, convert the video to avi using wmm, burn data to disc.
