Some one already recommend VLC player comes with it's own codecs should be able to run it on that media player , what is missing is a dvd decoder and they are not cheap to buy , check at corel and power dvd for their dvd decoder package , mainly all new laptops comes with a dvd decoder

If you want to stick to your default Media Player, you need to install external codecs like the free 'Windows 7 Codec Pack':
    http://download.cnet.com/windows/video-players/

It's works on XP, Vista and 7.

A better alternative is to use a totally different but better media player called KMPlayer. It's free and can play any media format that you throw at it. It has all the codecs you need built-in:
    http://filehippo.com/download_kmplayer/

Just read the installation instructions very well so you can decline the installation of the Ask Toolbar that comes bundled with most free programs. You don't need that.
