how can you copy dvd-r files onto a desktop, and if you cant how can you

copy dvd-r files onto a dvd-rw? i made the mistake of purchaseing a dvd-r and i recorded a whole movie on it. i was wondering if there was any way i can copy the files from the dvd-r to the desktop, or copy the files onto a dvd-rw. please help. im desperate!
