CD/DVD drives can fail whenever they so choose. They are very temperamental with moving parts and the optical sensors and all. It is very possible that yesterday it was working, and today it is not. They are not like the old floppy drives that used magnets to read info, they would very rarely fail. Buy a new drive, they run at about $20 - $50.

    click the XP_CD-DVD-Fix.exe here http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_cd_dvd_fix.htm

Download the the file then extract it...click XP_CD-DVD-Fix and click repair...then restart your computer

Your Cd and dvd drive should be working fine now

That happened to me also and now my Cd drive is working perfectly fine
