How can I copy a DVD from my public library to my mac ?

The DVD is a copy from the library, but after I copy it to my desktop there are two files, one with mp2 files and the other with vob., bup., and inf. files. None of the files will play on my computer. Can I convert these without buying ripping software? Any free software suggestions?
