How to back up a dvd.....?

I love watching movies with my family but my little munchkins love playing frisbee with my movies. I normally back up my movies but it seems to be getting harder now with some of the newer movies. Does anyone know about any new programs that are out there to be able to back up my movies with. And if possible, are there any free ones? Also, if a movie is scratched and skips will I still be able to back it up or will the scratch make the movie unreadable?
