Hooking up DVR to DVD recorder?

I am trying to connect my Direct TV DVR to a Samsung DVD recorder. I connected an S video cable from the DVR to the DVD recorder. The instructions say to use red, yellow, white cables to connect the DVR and the DVD recorder but that doesn't work, when I connect the red, yellow, white cables from back of TV to the DVD recorder than the video is showing but I am getting no audio. What am I doing wrong? Background info: also I have a HDMI cable hooked up to my TV from the DVD recorder.
