Help w/playing a DVD on a laptop?

I just purchased a Gateway laptop and can't get my DVDs to play on it. It has Vista and Windows Media center, but when I try to play one, it gives me a message asking if I have any other DVD software running (which I don't) and also suggests I lower the resolution or connection settings. It's not connected to a TV and I can only lower the resolution to 800x600; when I do that, it still doesn't work. Help!!
