Help with my brothers DVD Drive for HP d4990y?

I just burned a DVD data disc from my computer and wanted to play some files on his computer, but his computer does not seem to be reading the disc. I tried inserting a CD and it worked, i also tried insterting another DVD data disc and it didnt work. It doesnt read DVD data discs. I flashed a new update to the frive and nothing happened. My technical level of computers is pretty high but i cant seem to solve this problem. Any help would be greatly appriciated. Thank You.

You seem to have a bad DVD laser. The reason why it can read cds is because a different laser is used to read cds. The laser that burned out was the DVD laser. This is very common. You can look this subject up on google and verify what I am saying.

This can only be fixed by purchasing a new drive for the laptop.

I have had personal experience with the same problem, but with my ps3. My ps3 could not read blu rays or dvds because the blu ray laser had worn out from continuous use.
