I have a nice DVD collection but some shelf space to spare and was wondering if its a good idea to keep those DVD's out of the case that they were boughten with and use portible cases that hold multiple cds and zip up?

Nope, cos they will get dusty and may be scratched . I always put mine back in the case when im finished with them .
It is okay, but they will get scratched more than they would if they were in the actual case. It will be fine, just be careful.
Those may scratch it so keep it in its orig. case
I wouldn't. I would buy a separate rack, perhaps putting it by your TV or movie collection. Ive never liked CD/DVD sleeves, if the disc stays inside too long, it tends to "stick" to the surface of the sleeve.
Looks a lot nicer, showing off the title of movies in alphabetical order too. I choose Blurays, I barely own any DVD's, blu rays can be scratched with steel wool and itll still play perfectly.
