DVD & TV remotes stopped working simaltaniously when we put up the Christmas tree?

We just put up out Christmas tree today and now 2 different remotes stopped working. The universal remote still works for the audio receiver, vcr and TV, but not the cable box or DVD player (located on top of the vcr below the TV). The remote for the DVD player itself also will not work.

I realized that if you get less than an inch away then the remotes work (but then whats the point). I'm guessing there is some type of interference, but I'm not sure what in the world it could be....

Isn't a bit early for the Christmas tree?

In any case, if you have Christmas lights, turn them off and see if it helps.
Otherwise, either something is blocking the IR path or both remotes need new batteries!!
