Yes, Blu-ray players can play Blu-ray Disks as well as normal DVD's. There may be some cheap (no-name brand) blu-ray players that might only play blu-rays.

However, not all blu-ray players will playback recordable CD's and DVD's. So if you make your own home movies and burn them to a DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW or DVD-RW discs then you need to check that the player you are interested in is capable of playing these formats.

Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray Player
Samsung BDP-1000 Blu-ray Player

I own a Samsung BD HT1250 it can play burnt DVD's.
