Are torrents illegal?? is divx illegal?? what about mp3s?

Ok so i dont use kazaa limewire morphus or anything like that but one of my friends downloaded a torrent program and showed me how to use it im still a little confused for the most part however i bought a 1 terribyte hard drive recently and ive been divxing all of my dvds to my terribyte hard drive but some of my dvds are too old scratched or even broken and i tempted fate and downloaded them instead of divxing them so my question is......

I have all of the dvds and music cds to show that i actually own the movies and music that ive downladed through torrents or actually divxed to my computer so if were caught would it matter to the FBI or MMVA Police that i actually have the hard copies for everything that ive downloaded, See my problem is i lived in australia for 2 years and there i bought the battle star galactica set seasons 1-4 farscape seasons 1-4 mash seasons 1-11 and the movies and a few australian computer games i cannot get to install in the united states, so would i get fined for the things ive downloaded?? or if they fine me can i show them that hey i have the dvds and games and music cds on me for everything i downoaded i mean ok i can buy them again but thats a real hassle seeing as how i already have the australian versions for them but they wont play on any of my dvd players some of them music wont play and some of the games will not install which is annoying as hell i feel innocent for downlading them because i have the cd keys and the games in the australian versions so am i in trouble?? if it is going to be a problem i can just delete everything and buy them again but i hate to have to go through the hassle of trying to find them again, um unable to find the computer games/dvds/music that i bought in australia here in america some of them u can only get in australia so when i found torrents for them i was really happy.
ok sorry a little more here well i downloaded torrents for my the computer games however i used the australian cd keys and they worked their the american computer game versions but my australian cd keys actually worked when i installed them, strangely enough.
Lol well no thx Great, im not seeding any of my divx's and im not looking for anything other than what i alredy have, im going trough my dvds divxing everything because well gosh darnit lol i cant keep them from getting scratched and some of my music cds have been scratched too much to burn

ok so ive heard that people have been arrested for using payed music programs such as itunes microsoft music emusic downloads zune and other programs such as that payed subsciption programs i have personally used emusic itunes and im thinking about signing up for zune music they say u can download as much as u want tv music excetra for $14.95 a month is that illegal?? ive never seen any copy right for the material on there but ive downladed there i stoped ater i heard about the fbi arresting a teenage for using a $29.95 a month program she said "I had no idea since i was paying for it" am i better of actually buying from stores or is it safe??
I actually purchased a cd twice from a store because i lost my first copy and the second copy wouldnt let me burn it :-S for some reason then i sat on it on accident so i said the hell with it and downloaded it. but lol i have the broken cd in my room lol

If you do not have own the copy right, then you have no rights to distribute the Material over a file sharing service (or receive it for that matter)

No. Divx is a compression method used to shrink video as mp3s are a type of audio so they are not illegal. Torrents are files shared over p2p network so they in context are not illegal. HOWEVER, IT IS HOW YOU USE THEM THAT COUNTS. THE DOWNLOADING OF ANY COPYRIGHTED WORKS WITHOUT THE COPYRIGHT HOLDERS PERMISSION IS IN DIRECT VIOLATION OF THE DMCA AND IS ILLEGAL. However, If you rip the dvds, music, and games and can provide hard copy it is no problem. but only if you dont download and own a hard copy of ALL copyrighted works that you have on your computer.

-But nevertheless if you dont wanna get caught (which i dont/wouldn't either , use Rapidshare to find/download what you wish. IM me from my profile and i can get you behind vpn's etc. and help you.
