How do u convert a 700mb downloaded mp4 movie into avi or any other format playable

by divx DVD player? I downloaded Batman Begins 700mb from the internet but the format was mp4
Unfortunately after burning it to the DVD , when I tried to play it in my divx DVD player it said format not rendered or some crap like that..

Is there anyway I can convert it into any other divx format like avi , mpg or any other 1 which can be played by my DVD player?
Also I want the movie to remain of the same size i.e. 700mb
but I don't want its quality to degrade.
Are there any free software's to do the above or any other way ??

bit confused here, did you use a video burner, because video burners converts the video to the standard mpeg so its compat with all home dvd players
