Is DivX and XVid the same?
When one of them shows up from search results, the other also shows up. Are they the same? I don't really know much about files and stuff. thanks!

Both Divx and xvid are based on the MPEG-4 (part 2) standard; however, DivX is proprietary while xvid is open.

Today .mkv and mp4 are far more efficient as codecs.

No they aren't the same thing. If you're searching videos they both show up because the same video has been converted into both divx and xvid. You will need a divx player to watch the divx one.
