I know there's a chocolate molten lava cake, but I want to make a vanilla version, but I've no idea how. I'd need something to make up the substance of the missing melted chocolate. Any ideas?

Hmm....I'd say get a recipe for a vanilla sauce that's not too sweet and relatively like. Then get a firm butter or angel food cake and proceed as if you were making a chocolate one, except with the vanilla sauce and vanilla cake. Hope this helps.
