I was just doing some thinking and came up with a few quick questions that are open to both sides of the debate over gay marriage. If marriage is a religious institution, how does the government have any power to recognize any marriage? How can they give tax and legal benefits to married couples if it is a religious institution?
Why does the government give tax and legal benefits to married couples? What is the government's interest in marriage?
The way I see it, we have two choices: recognize (at least legally) some form of gay marriage to allow those citizen equal protection under the law or stop legally recognizing any marriage to protect the separation of church and state. Any thoughts?
