    Should we allow gay marriage?

I was just doing some thinking and came up with a few quick questions that are open to both sides of the debate over gay marriage. If marriage is a religious institution, how does the government have any power to recognize any marriage? How can they give tax and legal benefits to married couples if it is a religious institution?

Why does the government give tax and legal benefits to married couples? What is the government's interest in marriage?

The way I see it, we have two choices: recognize (at least legally) some form of gay marriage to allow those citizen equal protection under the law or stop legally recognizing any marriage to protect the separation of church and state. Any thoughts?

No. The government should not do ANY marriage. Marriage is a religious ceremony. The government should only be involved in civil unions.

I love the way we have it right now. Follow the Tenth Amendment and leave it up to the states.

My state(California) one of the most liberal states in the country voted to ban gay marriage.

    Says something huh?

You've got it. There's no good reason to deny two people that love each other from getting married. It's ultimately a legal contract as far as the government is concerned.

We should allow two people to love and it doesn't matter what they do as long as they don't harm anyone else. Government can't control love.

I believe we should have gay marriage, or at least some kind of civil union. The churches could decide whether or not they want to marry homosexuals, but civil unions should be allowed.
