You'll occasionally see a famous person in and around LA. You have to know who it is b/c a lot of famous people look different when you see them live in public.
Some Hollywood people are just freakazoids. All the people who couldn't live normal lives seem to live there. However, the majority of the people who live in Hollywood are just regular folks, trying to pay the bills and make ends meet.
You don’t see celebrities in Hollywood. That is a myth. Hollywood is basically just an industrial town, except that the industry is entertainment instead of, say, coal mining. If you are thinking that celebs are all over the streets of Hollywood, think again. First of all, most studios are not even in Hollywood. Second, most celebrities, especially the A-list type, protect their privacy. They rarely go out in public unless there is an event in which they are appearing. Just because you see a celebrity on “Entertainment Tonight” for two weeks running, don’t get the impression that they are just sitting around at Starbuck’s waiting to sign autographs. Occasionally one can be seen, but it is rare. Celebrities do shop, eat out, and pick up movies at Blockbuster, but it is rare to spot one.
If you do happen to see one out in public, the proper etiquette is to leave them alone. Don't scream, gush, ask for an autograph, or try to talk to them. Some are nice about it, but you could find yourself quickly removed from the premesis. Most often, they can be spotted dining out, shopping, or doing other mundane things. Many times, they are “dressed down”, wearing jeans, tees, sunglasses, and a hat. If you want to try spotting one, try these spots:
Gelson’s Market
Pink’s Hot Dogs
Canter’s Deli
Spago
The Ivey
Don’t try to get into one of the nightclubs they hang out in. You’ll never get past the velvet rope unless you have a few Benjamins to throw at the doorman. But if you had that kind of dough, I doubt you would be hanging around this forum.
The Hollywood section of Los Angeles has gone through a lot of different periods. In the 1920's through the 1940's maybe, it was HOLLYWOOD !! Land of the Stars (the so-called Golden Age of Hollywood). Before that it was agricultural.
In 1950's it retained some its glamour, which was starting to fade. By the 60s it had gone "hippie" and was starting to become run down, where it stayed for some time.
In recent decades, it has had somewhat of a renaissance, but has not achieved its former lustre. It attracts a lot of tourists to Hollywood and Highland, the Walk of Fame, the Chinese Theatre and so on.
Most of Hollywood is quite ordinary - banks, gas stations, grocery stores, and everything else that everywhere else has. It is pretty middle class for the most part, a bit more posh in the hills, and with some pretty mean sections, too.
A few of the streets, such as Melrose, have become very trendy, otherwise aren't particularly special.
Celebrities are few and far between in Hollywood itself, although there are still a few studios located there, notably Paramount and some TV production. Warner Bros, Universal, Disney and others are in the San Fernando Valley, and there more celebrities out there than in Hollywood itself. You can also see them from time to time on the West Side (Beverly Hills, Brentwood, and nearby upscale neighborhoods). That's where Fox and Sony studios are located.
But remember, Los Angeles is a city of 3 or 4 million people, and there at most a few hundred "big stars" and perhaps a few thousand "recognizable faces", so seeing them out in public is quite rare, especially since they tend to guard their privacy rather closely.
Hollywood is a rather seedy area by now. If you were to see a celebrity, it would be unusual. There are tourists around, and regular residents too. I have lived in LA for 38 years and seen so few celebrities that I could count them on one hand. But I am not interested in them and do not seek them out.
