Why do staggered rear shocks improve the rear suspension?

Obviously this is only done on live axles

I've heard that manufacturers have improved rear suspension by staggering shocks, i.e. one on front, one behind the axle.

Does it keep the axle better located?

Have you ever heard the phrase " every action has an equal and opposite reaction" This is to keep balance on the movements.
