How do I test the compression of a '74 Volkswagen?

I have a 74 thing (same engine and stuff as a beetle) and I wanna check the comression, what's the best tester for this and how do I do it?

(for those who will say "take it to a mechanic", or "if you have to ask, you can't do it" please go be useless on someone elses question, I am a novice, not an idiot)
