From what I understand, you do put a bit more wear on the engine and also the starter if you keep doing that. I really wouldn't recommend doing it either, especially at a red light. I mean how long is the light for? Besides, when it does turn green people behind you are going to immediately expect you to start moving and if your there fiddling around with the car trying to get it to start it could be a problem.
