Car head unit question...?

i keep blowing fuses on my amp and have an in-line fuse already connected running on the wire from the battery to the amp. I never blow this one though, it is always the two in the amp. I took it to a shop and they suggested i get a new head unit with 3-4 preamp volts. Is there any thing else i could do to solve this problem? and what size preamp voltage would you suggest? i have 2 12' hooked up to a 500 watt amp.
