Well technically they are cheaper, But they are not safer. More people get in fender benders just because its a manual than automatics. They can role backwards and jump forwards when starting. They aren't bad but if you weren't ready or forgot to start it out of gear, the car could totally put you in a wreck. Tell your mom this, "shes going to hate me" . Yes a standard does take two hands and more concentration, So why would you chance it when he goes to text on his phone when driving. We both know he's going to do it, so at least give him less to worry about.
Also, the maintance on a standard cost more than an automatic, You change the fluid in an automatic, but have to pay 1000 to get a clutch replaced. I would go with automatic, but you should defenitely learn how to drive a standard.
