What types of Martial Arts are out there?

I know this could turn into a huge list but i'm just looking for some of the more popular fighting styles and maybe a bit of an explanation for each. I've heard of so many, i just don't know the different and the positives and negatives of each.

yes the list is huge, some popular ones are
Krav Maga designed to be deadly quicker and more efficiently
Brazilian juijitsu designed to be able to beat larger opponents more efficiently
Traditional juijitsu designed to utilize leverage and submissions
Judo Throwing opponents away from you using leverage and their strength,
Aikido similar to Judo but with locks, traps and throws
Hapkido, mix of Aikido, Jujitsu and Taekwondo
Karate-many styles, mostly focused on striking. Shotokan/Kempo great styles
TaeKwando- great if studied correctly, striking, kicking/punching
Savate- devastating kicks
Kajukenbo-mixed martial art, shotokan/kempo karates/judo/jujitsu/boxing very street effective style.
Jeet Kun Do-mixed art that focuses more of an encompasing philosophy toward individual training in diffrent techniques. one student may use different techniques than another focusing on their strengths.

Krav Maga-Israeli martial arts. used by the israeli military.

Muay Thai- Brutal enough to be called a martial art even though some see it as a combat sport. focuses on using the hardest joints of the body (ie. knees and elbows) as well as kicking using the shin.

Jeet Kune Do-Brcue Lee's creation.

Karate (varied)- system of unarmed combat (originally developed in okinawa, japan, although other forms of karate exist today). Popular with the west (im not really sure why though).

Wing Chun- hard chinese martial art. pretty popular. sometimes called "chinese street fighting." effective, as well as dirty.

Ninjutsu- Literally, this martial art has no limitations and is just downright dirty and unsportsmanlike. That said, it is also one of the most effective and deadly martial arts in the world (when studied properly of course). Not so sure about the popularity of it though... but i can assure you, it is extremely effective.

uhh. yea, there's probably more, but i dont wanna tire out my fingers

remember, martial arts differ from combat sports... martial arts have no limitations, whereas martial sports are used in competitions and sparring and do have limitations on what can be used, so as to not sustain permanent injuries/disabilities/death or any unwanted physical condition brought on by fighting. However, many martial arts can also be applied to a sport context given the omission of death blows, groin shots, or any "unsportsmanlike" techniques or abilities.

so, that's why i didn't add boxing or wrestling...

There are many types but ones I'm familiar with are:

Muay-Thai and BJJ

Muay-Thai the art of 8 limbs is a devastating stand-up style martial art. It focuses heavily on conditioning, conditoning and conditoning some more. Think boxing then add kicks, elbows and knees. The style is very simplistic but highly effective. Muay-Thai will transform your entire body into a weapon. If you want a good sample look up Ramon Dekkers high-lights on youtube. A person trained in Thai can easily crush someone's ribs with a single kick after a couple of years.

BJJ - focuses heavily on grappling but with joint locks, choke holds and it will force your opponents to submit or you break their arms and legs.

Train Thai first - Don't bother with any art that doesn't have any conditioning. Why?? Whats the point of having skills if you don't have the conditioning to use them or take a hit.

later.
