If what you mean by "real" is whether it's staged like WWE, then yes, UFC is completely real: the guys are actually hitting each other and causing injuries. Boxing is a sport, and UFC is just boxing plus kicking, wrestling, and other moves, so it has to be classified as a sport too.
As for how it "compares" to football, that really depends on opinion. I love UFC and other MMA fighting because everything is at stake: a loss is a really big blow to a fighter's career, whereas a loss in football is not the end of the world unless it's a finals game. The guys in football can get injured trying to stop each other, but in the UFC the athletes' health is always at stake, plus there are no pads or protection. Also, when you watch a football game, you only get one game at a time, whereas if you watch a UFC headliner, you generally get a bunch of other fights that come before it as well.
