Should the belt systems be standardized in martial arts?

Regarding skill/knowledge/ability/application of the art or technique in question, one could appropriate the level of mastery to a person, represented by a specific color. This would of course have to be standardized and whatnot.

I guess sashes and other signifiers could also be standardized as well?

Maybe the belt system could represent the level of mastery for any martial art?
