It's not a competitive martial art. If you want a competitive karate style go for Kyokushin.

Washin Ryu Karate was brought to the US by Hidy Ochai and I am not sure who told you it was non-contact but they do train Kumite. Maybe some of the schools do not permit contact but I trained with Ochai Sensei many years ago for a few weeks and he could dish it out and recieve it with the best of them (I was training in Kyokushin at the time and competing). Their classes were not the toughest but it is a decent art for learning to balance the mind, body and spirit...as all good martial arts are.

I would try out a few classes and see if it is for you. If not then you can always find one that you like better but keep in mind most people make quick judgements about an art before even getting a chance to truly see if they will enjoy it. If they offer a six month trial period that should be decent enough to learn if it is for you or not. Good luck.
