The side kick has a greater range and generally more power. It also exposes less of your body, because you're turned sideways. It offers more in the way of follow-ups, too. If the guy backs up, you can pursue with another side kick or a roundhouse kick, or follow-through with a spinning back kick. If he brushes it to the outside, you can hit him with a cross (reverse punch) as your foot sits down, or attack again with a roundhouse kick. If he brushes it to the inside, you can try another side kick, or a short back kick, or a spinning hand technique (back fist or elbow).
